Traffic on the rail track between Anekal and Hosur near Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border, disrupted by the derailment of the Ernakulam-bound Express train that claimed nine lives, was restored today.
"Yes, the (accident) site has been cleared and the route has been restored (for traffic) this morning," Divisional Railway Manager (Bangalore) Anil Kumar Agarwal told PTI.

He also said the toll stood at nine and the injured were being treated at hospitals.Investigations were on to ascertain the cause of the derailment, he added.

Nine passengers were killed and 18 were seriously injured when nine bogies of Bangalore-Ernakulam Inter-city Express derailed near Anekal, about 45 kms from here, yesterday. The victims included three women and a nine-year-old boy.

The daily train had derailed nearly 80 minutes after departure from Bengaluru between Anekal Road and Hosur on Bangalore City-Salem Section, resulting in either full or partial cancellation or diversion of several trains.

"Prima-facie cause of the derailment was a boulder on the track," an official statement had said.

An inquiry into the mishap is being conducted by Commissioner Railway Safety S K Mittal.

CLOSE ENCOUNTER
I moved three bodies and started feeling
dizzy. I've been part of several rescue
operations. I was cutting open the metal
parts of the train. We carried some bodies
out. When I was carrying the third body, I
could see only the forehead and the legs. I
felt giddy and blacked out.

WARDEN, CIVIL DEFENCE

Loco-pilot of the Ernakulam-bound Bengaluru City-Ernakulam Intercity express (Train no. 12677) that derailed on the city’s outskirts today morning, A.T. Fernandes’, blood and urine samples are being taken for testing.
Sources said that Fernandes, in his statement to the railways officials, said that he felt a big jerk and applied emergency brakes, but by then the train was derailed.
When questioned if it the train was over-speeding, he said there will be a speed recorder in engine which would have recorded the speed. An inquiry in Bengaluru will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Meanwhile, some of the officers involved in the rescue work were injured. Electronic city fire station officer Venkateshappa was injured during the rescue work. A metal sheet hit him and while trying to block it with hands, both his forearms were fractured, sources said.
Civil Defence Chief P.R.S. Chetan was also rushed to the hospital after he fainted as the rescue spot.
S. K. Mittal, Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety, New Delhi, visited the spot and conducted preliminary inquiry.
