Fire force rescues 5 trekkers :: A trek that proved costly::When trekkers trespass, the cops suffer the most

A trek for a group of 12 dental students from the city in the picturesque Skandagiri in Chickballapur turned into a nightmare and landed them in the police station.
The police, and the Fire and Emergency Services personnel went into a tizzy after receiving a call from one of the trekkers, who informed them that he had been separated from the group.
These youngsters had started their trek in two groups at Skandagiri, a popular hillock among trekkers, about 60 km in the city. Incidentally, the Forest Department has restricted the entry to Skandagiri after a series of accidents.
Police sources said that Abhishek, one of the trekkers, lost his way and called the Fire and Emergency Services and said that he had lost his way. Immediately, the Fire and Emergency Services personnel informed the Chickballapur police who were half way through Skandagiri. Just as the police personnel were going to help him, the Fire and Emergency Services got a call stating that he had found his friends.
Once the trekkers reached the ground around noon, Chickballapur police registered against them a case under 188 of IPC for violating instructions of a public servant.

When trekkers trespass, the cops suffer the most
nother weekend, and another group of techies gets lost or lands up in a perilous position out in the wilderness.

On Saturday night, five techies decided to head out for a trek into Skandagiri. Despite the forest department saying that they would officially open up guided treks soon, this group just couldn't wait, and in their impatience landed them in hot water. Spotting forest guards, the group decided to take a different route in the hope they would not be spotted and found themselves hopelessly lost. An SOS was soon sent out to the fire department and the police.
Chikballapur police told Mirror that the group was split up and the two techies leading the group were soon separated from the other three. After spending more than five hours trundling around in circles they finally decided to call for help.
The news also reached the local police who rushed to the spot. By then, however, the techies had found their way back on to the main path, and the cops were left fuming. Cases of trespassing were booked against them, and the cops soon nabbed a group of seven doctors trying to follow in the techies' misleading footsteps. They too were slapped with trespassing charges.
But if you think it was the techies who went through a harrowing time out in the wild, spare a thought for the cops and emergency services who are called out every time someone with half a brain thinks he's Edmund Hillary or David Livingstone.
The police not only have to manage meager resources but also spend their valuable time searching for and rescuing people who should never have been where they ended up in the first place.
Police sources say that in most stations near tourist spots, they are understaffed and have to spend hours tracing people.
Police sources told Mirror: "We are used to these kinds of calls. We end up leaving all our work and heading to a hillock somewhere. Most of the time, we have to send our men to climb the hillock and rescue people. I don't understand why people want to risk their lives as well as trouble us by taking up such misadventures which are definitely uncalled for. When the forest department itself has announced that it would soon be opening trekking trails, why can't they wait till then.
Hence, we have taken the issue seriously and booking cases against them." Chikballapur Circle Inspector Balaji Singh said, "It is restricted area. Many times we try to stop people from entering but they just take another route. The worst part is that they try to enter the place at 2 am or 3 am. Whenever we get a call, we have to rush to the spot and then wake up the localites, as they are the only experts and head out for a rescue mission." In fact, this is the plight of cops across the state. The worst-affected seem to be those from Sathanur, under the jurisdiction of Sangama and Mekedaatu police.
"People know that the Cauvery waters are dangerous but yet they wade in and are washed away. Family members of the victims blame us. Every time, there is news, the police have to rush from Sathanur which is around 27 kilometres away. Many a times, we need to pay from our own pocket to find a localite to go on the search operation," added a police official.
This was the case recently at Savanadurga, when the police had to wait for hours requesting localites if they could scale Savanadurga to rescue a group of youths stuck there.
"We are not expert climbers. We get calls saying that I am struck at a place. However, we don't want to take any chances and hence, we had to call up our sources in Bengaluru to see who are the experts who can actually help us in the situation. Our men had to be at the place till the operation was over to oversee the rescue mission which went on till midnight," added another cop.

Fire force rescues 5 trekkers

CHIKKABALLAPUR: Five youths from Bengaluru who went on a trek to Skandagiri hill, Chikkaballapur district, 68km north of Bengaluru, lost their way and spent a long nightmarish night before being rescued on Sunday afternoon. The incident underlines the perils faced by city youngsters who go on trekking expeditions in treacherous and prohibited locales around Bengaluru, without any expert guidance. Fire and emergency services personnel in the thick of rescue operations also spotted seven doctors interning at a government hospital in Bengaluru on their way up the hillock.

All 12 youths were taken to Chikkaballapur Rural police station, where they were arrested and released. The five Bengalureans, all MBA grads and managers with private companies, reportedly left the city Saturday midnight and reached Kalavara village, at the foot of Skandagiri hill or Kalavara betta, around 2am. According to police sources, foresters on night patrol had accosted the youths and warned them against continuing their trek.

However, the men, aged between 25 and 30, ignored all warnings and began walking towards the hill top. Two of them were ahead, while the other three remained behind. Soon, both groups lost contact with each other.

Their mobile phones were unreachable and it was only around 7am that one of the five youths managed to call 101 and alert fire and emergency services. The caller reportedly told the fire control room that he and his friends had lost their way and were unable to contact one another. Fire personnel reached the foothill around 8am and had a tough time locating the lost trekkers as their mobile signals were weak.

Around noon, fire personnel could locate the trekkers and guide them into ...

Upa Lokayukta Justice Subhash B Adi visited K R Market on Thursday in the wake of complaints.....

Upa Lokayukta Justice Subhash B Adi visited K R Market on Thursday in the wake of complaints that several vacant spots at the remodelled market area have been converted into shops.

He said that as many as 21 such shops were identified during the visit. A Fire and Emergency official, who was present, told Upa Lokayukta that a report on the lack of fire safety was submitted to the BBMP, but no action has been taken.

There was heavy deployment of police at the market since there were reports that some of the traders, who own illegally allotted shops, would create law and order situation during Justice Adis visit.

BBMP Commissioner Lakshminarayana and other officials, who were present at the spot, gave oral undertaking to take immediate action against the illegal shops.

"The situation at the remodelled market is pathetic. The Fire Department official said the report submitted by him has not been taken seriously. No fire engine can reach the remodelled market area in case of emergency. Even the fire extinguishers at the market are not in working condition. Most of the traders and people complained that the market area was cleaned only in the wake of my visit," Justice Adi said.

Upa Lokayukta has found that 21 shops have been allotted space in the open area meant for fire safety, garbage dumping and other ventilation.

A few traders filed a complaint to Upa Lokayukta stating that the Commissioner Lakshminarayana himself had endorsed a few illegal shops in the remodelled market area. They said the procedure of issuing licence and allotment of shops were not only illegal, but also contrary to Transparency Act.

Justice Adi said he will prepare a detailed report on the illegal allotment of shops and direct the BBMP to take action.

Mysuru :: Fire evacuation drills to be held in educational institutions

The Mysuru Range of the Karnataka State Fire and Emergency Services will carry out fire safety evacuation drills and hold lecture sessions in various educational institutions and commercial and industrial establishments in the district during the Fire Service Week that began here on Wednesday.
The Fire Service Week was inaugurated by the Regional Fire Officer, Mysuru, G. Eshwar Naik, on Tuesday as April 14 has been declared the Fire Service Day to pay homage to the fire services personnel, who lost their lives in the rescue operation during the devastating fire that erupted at Victoria Dock in Mumbai port on this day in 1944.
Speaking to The Hindu , Mr. Naik said each of the four fire stations in Mysuru will be visiting at least one or two educational institutions and industrial establishment in their area during the week to hold evacuation drills, rehearsals and lecture sessions to create awareness about fire safety among the students and employees. Similarly, programmes will also take place at the taluk-level in the district, he added.
Mr. Naik sought to caution that fire accidents happen more often during summer due to the dry weather conditions. Soaring temperatures have also been attributed to the natural outbreak of fire.
Even though electrical short circuit is cited as one of the main reasons for the outbreak of fire, Mr. Naik appealed to the people to take necessary fire safety precautions at home particularly while handling their Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders and stoves.

As part of their Fire Service Week, the Fire and Emergency Services prsonnel will also administer a pledge to the general public that includes accepting a gas cylinder only after inspecting the valve and seal, never attempting to repair the regulator valve or burner themselves and instead call the LPG agency, always positioning the stove above the cylinder, always switching off the both the regulator and burner valve after use and getting the gas stove serviced at regular intervals.

Fire on Parked Train Destroys Wires, Ceiling

BENGALURU:Fire broke out in an empty First Class AC compartment of Hazur Sahib Nanded-Bangalore City Express (Train no. 16593) on Saturday after it had terminated its journey at the City station. The train was on its way to the stabling yard (temporary halting place for trains) when the fire broke out, damaging the roof of the compartment, burning the AC wiring and destroying one corner of the bogey.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained and a three-member inquiry committee has been set up to look into the issue,” said Sanjiv Agarwal, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM).
The DRM said that the Nanded Express left Hazur Sahib Nanded station (in Maharashtra) station at 6 am on Friday and reached the City station at 5.20 a.m Saturday. It was taken to the stabling yard at 6.30 am.
“Around 8.50 am, someone from the stabling yard noticed smoke emanating from the AC compartment. The coach was isolated and the fire department alerted,” Agarwal said.
Fire personnel reached the station within 10 minutes of the call, he said.
“The top corner of the coach, where the attendant sits, has been damaged. It appears that the fire has spread from there to the roof of the compartment. The AC wiring is gone too.”
“I am perplexed about how the fire started because all the train doors are shut before it is taken to the stabling yard and the AC coach has sealed windows,” he said. The AC in the train is switched off a few minutes before it reaches the destination, he added.
Agarwal ruled out speculation that it could have been a lit cigarette left behind that could have caused the fire, saying passengers would have left the coach around 5.30 am and the fire started only by 8.50 am. “Fire from a lit cigarette would not take that long to spread. Also all windows are closed, which rules out the chance of someone throwing a butt in,”  he said.
The committee, consisting of assistant officers from the mechanical, electrical and security departments, is expected to submit its findings in a week or two.

Burning Cigarette Sparked Fire in Stationary Train: Report

BENGALURU:A burning cigarette left behind carelessly by a person in the toilet caused the fire in an AC coach of the Hazur Sahib Nanded-Bangalore City Express on April 11, an inquiry committee has established.
The report on the fire accident in a First Class compartment on Train No 16593 was submitted on Wednesday by C S Gupta, senior divisional electrical engineer, Bengaluru Division, to Divisional Railway Manager Sanjiv Agarwal. The fire had broken out in the empty AC compartment (coach no 06002) around 8.50 am when it was on its way to the stabling yard at City Railway Station after arriving from Nanded, Maharashtra. There were no casualties but the roof of the compartment, the AC wiring and one corner of the bogey were destroyed.
Agarwal said, “A one-man committee has established that it was not a case of electrical short circuit as was initially suspected. All the electrical systems were intact.”
As the train had reached the station around 6.30 am and the fire broke out only around 8.50 am, well after all passengers had disembarked, the cigarette is suspected to have been left behind by someone who had boarded the train in the intervening period. “In the past, we have had incidents of miscreants entering empty AC compartments to use the toilets by forcing open the shutter of the coach. Something similar happened here,” Agarwal said.
He added that the probe committee did not find a cigarette butt, but believes it may have burnt completely in the fire.
The accident cost the Railways a loss of around Rs 1.5 lakh. Probe into the matter had initially been entrusted to a junior officer but was subsequently handed over to a senior officer.
On the steps to be taken to avert such incidents in future, Agarwal said the Railways would make sure that supervision is increased around empty compartments.
