Belagavi :: Shops Collapse at Amba Bhavan : 12Feb2015



About 6 Shops on Nala(Storm water drain) near St Mary’s on Shivaji road collapsed at about 1.45 am on Thrusday. One person was killed and 3 injured. The shops were built by the City corporation but the shop owners had modified the structure which might have caused the collapse experts feel.
The hotel Mirchi Cola is one amongst the shops which has collapsed. The Shops were built on a storm water drain and even a multi storey structure was built on the slab of the drain which collapsed today.


The shops built on 3000 sq feet were built in 2006. The deceased a worker of the hotel who had come out of the hotel went back to take his belongings and got trapped. The hotel had made a make shift tin roof shed as a restaurant.

BELAGAVI: One person killed and three others were injured in the collapse of commercial complex belong to Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) constructed illegally upon main drainage nala on Shivaji Road behind St. Mary's School on Thursday wee hours. Mishap could even larger if occurred at the daytime.
Vinayak Shivaji Patkar (42) native of Sawantwadi is the victim and injured identified as Pandurang Kamble (32) of Umagao village in Chandgad taluk, Srikant Kamble (35) of Halakarni village and Babu Samboche (58) of Sadashiv Nagar here. BCC has decided to pay Rs 1 lakh compensation to the family of deceased and bear medical expenditure of injured.
BCC constructed this complex with 34 shops upon nala in 1984 and the resettled the shop owners whose shops were removed in the road widening near central bus stand. Not just commercial shops but also one anganwadi school and Urdu government primary school was running in the same complex.
According to high court directions, no building should be constructed upon nalas. However, the HC order has never taken into the consideration here and constructed the shops just putting cement slab upon nala without pillars. Besides, never checked the strength or feasibility of the slab since the construction has made. Many shop owners illegally built first floor themselves without BCC permission and carrying commercial business. This apart, according to BCC sources lease period of the several shop owners completed several years ago but they were carrying the business illegally.
Among the eight shops collapsed, three were belong to Ganesh Halagekar who running wine shop at the ground floor and hotel Mirchi Cola at illegally built first floor. As many as 10 labours of Mirchi Cola hotel stayed in the hotel at the night. However, six of them survived safely and other four fixed into the building. Among the injured, condition of Pandurang Kamble is critical and shifted to KLE Hospital. Other two are getting treatment to BIMS government hospital.
Following the incident, mayor Mahesh Naik held emergency meeting at the BCC office where city MLAs Firoz Sait and Sambhaji Patil also were present. Meeting was decided to book criminal cases against the shop owners running business even after expiry of lease period and constructed first floor illegally. MLA Firoz Sait suggested to book the engineers and concerned officials given permission for this commercial complex three decades ago. Meeting also decided to investigate the incident by the team of five engineers.
After the meeting, BCC commissioner visited the spot and asked shop owners to vacate the shops giving four hours time for the same.
