A large plume of smoke enveloped Chamundi Hills, and vehicles to and from the hill were diverted. Around 7.30 p.m. the flames were put out and only burning cinders remained.
The ‘ground fire’ is estimated to have caused damage to 40 acres.
Deputy Conservator of Forests Karikalan told The Hindu that it was a man-made fire and contrary to popular perception, there are no natural fires that occur in India.
“We suspect the handiwork of miscreants, who may have set the dry vegetation on fire or carelessly flung a beedi or a cigarette. The other suspected cause is random burning of garbage near the foothills, and the leaping flames may have set the vegetation — which is completely dry — on fire,” he said.
The Forest Department had cleared dry vegetation along 70 km of the fire lines through controlled burning during winter, and this helped contain the fire from spreading to other parts of the hill.
“We have fire lines in concentric circles around Chamundi Hills, and that is why the Nandi statue and the hill top are protected,” Mr. Karikalan added.

ಮೈಸೂರು: ಇಲ್ಲಿಯ ಚಾಮುಂಡಿ ಬೆಟ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಂಗಳವಾರ ಆಕಸ್ಮಿಕ ಬೆಂಕಿ ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ಹಲವು ಎಕರೆಗಳಷ್ಟು ಅರಣ್ಯ ಪ್ರದೇಶ ನಾಶವಾಗಿದೆ.
ಮೈಸೂರು ತಾಲ್ಲೂಕಿನ ಉತ್ತನಹಳ್ಳಿ ಮಾರ್ಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಪ್ರದೇಶ ಹಾಗೂ ಲಲಿತಾದ್ರಿಪುರದ ಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಧ್ಯಾಹ್ನ ೧೨.೩೦ರ ಸುಮಾರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಅರಣ್ಯದ ಹುಲ್ಲುಗಾವಲು ಪ್ರದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಂಡ ಬೆಂಕಿ ಕ್ರಮೇಣ ಎಲ್ಲೆಡೆ ವ್ಯಾಪಿಸಿತು. ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಅರಣ್ಯದ ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕ ಮೂರು ಸ್ಥಳಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಂಕಿ ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ದಟ್ಟವಾಗಿ ಹೊಗೆಯಾಡುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಇದನ್ನು ಗಮನಿಸಿದ ಚಾಮುಂಡಿಬೆಟ್ಟ ಗ್ರಾಮಸ್ಥರು ಮತ್ತು ಪೊಲೀಸರು ಬೆಂಕಿ ನಂದಿಸಲು ಹೋದಾಗ, ಅದರ ಕೆನ್ನಾಲಿಗೆ ಎತ್ತರಕ್ಕೆ ಚಿಮ್ಮಿ ಎಲ್ಲೆಡೆ ಆವರಿಸಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ಸ್ಥಳದಿಂದ ಕಾಲ್ಕಿತ್ತರು.
ನಗರದ ವಿವಿಧೆಡೆ ಬೆಂಕಿ ಅನಾಹುತ ಸಂಭವಿಸಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅಗ್ನಿಶಾಮಕ ವಾಹನ ಸ್ಥಳಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುವುದು ತಡವಾಯಿತು. ಕೆಲವರು ಹಸಿರು ಸೊಪ್ಪು ಹಿಡಿದು ಬೆಂಕಿ ನಂದಿಸಲು ಮಾಡಿದ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ವ್ಯರ್ಥವಾಯಿತು. ಬೆಟ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿ ದಟ್ಟ ಹೊಗೆ ಆವರಿಸಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಗರು ಮತ್ತು ಚಾಮುಂಡಿ ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಗ್ರಾಮ ಸ್ಥರಲ್ಲಿ ಆತಂಕ ಮನೆ ಮಾಡಿತು.

ಮಧ್ಯಾಹ್ನ 1 ಗಂಟೆ ಸುಮಾರಿಗೆ ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಂಡ ಕಾಳ್ಗಿಚ್ಚಿನಿಂದಾಗಿ ಅಪಾರ ಪ್ರಮಾಣದ ಸಸ್ಯಸಂಪತ್ತು ನಾಶವಾಗಿದೆ. ವಲಯ ಅರಣ್ಯಾಧಿಕಾರಿ ಅಜೀಜ್‌ ನೇತೃತ್ವದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಥಳಕ್ಕೆ ಧಾವಿಸಿದ ಅರಣ್ಯ ಇಲಾಖೆ ಸಿಬ್ಬಂದಿ ಬೆಂಕಿ ನಂದಿಸಲು ಹರಸಾಹಸ ಮಾಡಿದರು.
ಬಿಸಿಲಿನ ತಾಪಕ್ಕೆ ಬೆಂಕಿ ಇನ್ನಷ್ಟು ರಭಸವಾಗಿ ಹೊತ್ತಿ ಉರಿಯಲಾರಂಭಿಸಿತು. ಸಂಜೆ ವೇಳೆಗೆ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪಮಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಬೆಂಕಿ ನಿಯಂತ್ರಣಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದಿದೆ. ಇಲಾಖೆ ಸಿಬ್ಬಂದಿ ಸ್ಥಳದಲ್ಲೇ ಮೊಕ್ಕಾಂ ಹೂಡಿದ್ದು, ಬೆಂಕಿ ನಂದಿಸುವ ಕಾರ್ಯಾಚರಣೆ ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಇದೇ ಅರಣ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ನಾಗರಹಳ್ಳಿ ಸಮೀಪ 20 ದಿನಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ಬೆಂಕಿ ಬಿದ್ದಿದ್ದು, ಹತ್ತಾರು ಎಕರೆ ನೀಲಗಿರಿ ನೆಡುತೋಪು ಮತ್ತು ಕುರುಚಲು ಕಾಡು ನಾಶವಾಗಿತ್ತು.

Mysuru, Feb. 25- In an incident, suspected to be the handiwork of miscreants, fire destroyed hundreds of acres of forest atop Chamundi Hill here yesterday evening besides taking toll of lives of small animals and birds. The fire which was noticed at about 3 pm near Lalithadripura side soon engulfed large tracts of forest destroying trees, plants, small animals and birds. The entire area of the portion of the forest which caught fire was engulfed with thick smoke emanating from the fire causing tension among the residents there. K.R. Police Inspector Parashuramappa and staff who rushed to the spot on receiving information, tried to douse the fire with the help of local residents but in vain. Fire Brigade personnel, who rushed to the Hill along with five fire tenders, struggled to extinguish the fire which rose to about 20 ft. height and was spreading fast due to wind. Fire also broke out at about four to five spots atop the Hill simultaneously, which made the fire service personnel struggle to extinguish the fire. Meanwhile, people who had assembled at the spot were heard saying that this was for the first time that such huge fire had broke out atop the Hill. District Fire Officer Gururaj, Station Officer Raju including about 30 Fire Brigade personnel, RFOs Puttaraj and Satish, Guard Krishna, about 50 Forest staff, 30 Police personnel, local residents and others struggled for hours before extinguishing the fire at about 11 pm.

Forest area ravaged by Chamundi fire
The fire which broke out at Chamundi Hills on Tuesday evening has been completely doused but the damage to the local habitat is extensive.
Though it was estimated that about 40 acres of forest may have been ravaged in the fire, it is now reckoned that more than 150 acres of scrub forests have been scorched in the fire.
The cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained but it is suspected to have been caused by miscreants carelessly throwing burning cigarettes or beedis or leaping flames from the burning garbage at the foothills.
Deputy Conservator of Forests, Karikalan told The Hindu that about 40 forest department staff assisted by a few volunteers from the local community managed to bring the fire under control by 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday. But the smouldering embers were stoked again and the hill was ravaged by a second wave of fire that broke out at around 8.30 p.m. and raged till 4 a.m. on Wednesday.
“We could see the movement of snakes and hares though smaller reptilian creatures may have perished as it was a ground fire,” said Mr. Karikalan. In all, six fire tenders were pressed into service but their reach was limited to about 60 meters to 80 meters given the terrain and hence the staff used the traditional method of stomping out the fire physically beating it with branches.
