No construction, blasting, drilling, tilling of soil or load-shifting allowed
A five-kilometer radius around the Yelahanka Air Force Station is declared a ‘no-fire zone’ for five days in view of the Aero India show scheduled to begin on Wednesday.
The Karnataka State Fire and Emergency Services Department along with the City police and other civic agencies have banned all construction activities, blasting, drilling, tilling of soil, heavy earthmovers and load shifting in the five-km radius of Yelahanka and Jakkur.
A senior official of Fire and Emergency department told Deccan Herald that orders had been issued to ensure that no fire takes place in the vicinity. Construction activities have also been restricted to ensure that no untoward incidents take place.
This is important not only because of Aero India, but also in view of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to inaugurate the event. Aero India is the pride of Bengaluru and delegates from over 100 countries are taking part in the show. The onus of safety is on us.”
The official said that in the last three months over 10 meetings have been held with the chief secretary, defence officials, municipalities, police and the fire and emergency departments. “We have been performing fire drills for a month here and the last one was done on Tuesday, the eve of the air show. Security measures in case of high rise buildings have also been taken care of. Closure orders have been issued to all fish breeding ponds and establishments selling non-vegetarian food in a 10-km radius of the venue.
This is to avoid garbage and litter which attract scavenging birds like kites,” said the official. About 30 fire and emergency vehicles are deployed off side and about 25 are deployed on side the venue. About 125 officers and fire men are also stationed at strategic locations. The National Disaster Response Force are also deployed to keep a watch on all activities. Home guards have been helpful in educating residents and commercial space dwellers in the area. People were told not to strew garbage or set it on fire in the vicinity.
Precautionary and controlled burning was also done by the defence personnel and the fire and emergency department in and around Yelahanka and Jakkur.
