Mangaluru :: ‘Disaster Reduction Day’ celebrated :: February 11, 2015

A large number of scouts and guides, police, home guards and firemen took part in the Disaster Reduction Day celebrated here on Wednesday.
The Disaster Reduction Day was celebrated to generate awareness among people about disasters and ways to mitigate it. It was being held as per the directions of Directorate of Home guards and Civil Defence.
As a part of the celebration, a rally of the participants was taken out from Milagres Church. They marched up to the District police grounds holding placards namely, against communal riots, not to fall pray to narcotic drugs and asking people to join Civil Defence.


At the District Police grounds, the Fire and Emergency Services personnel demonstrated fire and emergency drills. Additional Deputy Commissioner Sadashiva Prabhu, Mangaluru Police Commissioner S.Murugan and Chief Fire Officer S.Varadarajan took part in the event. They distributed cash prizes to winners of essay and drawing competitions held as a part of the celebration.

The District Home Guards on Wednesday observed the National Disaster Reduction Day before the office of the Superintendent of Police.
The function was held in association with the District Fire Service Department.
Earlier, a rally was held from the Milagres Church premises to the SP office Grounds.
Speaking on the occasion, Police Commissioner S. Murugan said that disasters could not be prevented by the government machinery alone and active participation of every citizen was required.
The second-in-command of the Homeguards’ Mohammed Ismail, Chief Fire Officer H.S. Varadaraj, and Assistant Deputy Commissioner Srinivas Prabhu were among those present on the occasion.

How to Manage or Avoid the Disaster Reduction Day Observed in Mangalore

The Dakshina Kannada District Home Guards in association with the District Fire Service Department observed the National Disaster Reduction Day at the SP office grounds here Mangalore on February 11.
Prior to the programme, a rally was held from the Milagres Church premises which culminated at the SP office Grounds. Parish Priest of Milagres Church Fr Valerian D’Souza flagged off the rally. The second in command of the Homeguards’ Mohammed Ismail welcomed the gathering. Chief Fire Officer H S Varadaraj briefed on how to reduce disasters and how to involve ourselves in reducing disasters. He said that the children can involve themselves in reducing disasters in their homes; when their parents take them to school and they do not wear the safety helmet, they should politely ask them to wear the helmet, which is compulsory.
