Mini-bus catches fire at Hiriyur

A private mini-bus caught fire owing to technical snag in the engine at Birenhalli village near Vani Vilas Sagar in Hiriyur taluk of the district here on Sunday afternoon.

According to police sources, a total of 35 people from Bangalore had come in the bus for a weekend trip to Vani Vilas Sagar and other places in the district. When the bus was near Birenhalli, the alerted all passengers to get down from the bus.

By the time fire extinguishers reached the spot, the bus was completely burnt. A case has been registered.

Miscreants set garbage truck on fire
BENGALURU, December 13, 2015

With the number of cases of illegally dumped garbage increasing across the city, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike’s (BBMP) squad that has stepped up vigil caught three trucks laden with garbage trying to dump waste clandestinely near Sumanahalli on Magadi Road, in the wee hours on Saturday.

One of them was even set on fire by miscreants, which was put out by personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services.

A senior BBMP official told The Hindu that they had received several complaints about garbage from the core city being dumped illegally in the outer zones, especially on Mysore Road, Goraguntepalya and Kanakapura Road. “We had formed squads and health officials were keeping a vigil to catch these trucks. Early on Saturday, around 1.30 a.m., the squad caught three vehicles at Sumanahalli,” he said.

During enquiries, it emerged that the BBMP had earlier caught one of the trucks and had even lodged a complaint against the truck owner with the Kamakshipalya police. “After we seized the three vehicles, our officials punctured the tyres and took out the batteries, as we didn’t want the vehicles to be towed or taken away from the spot.”

The official said a police complaint has been lodged against Gangamma Devi Transport, which owns the three vehicles.

BBMP commissioner G. Kumar Naik, special commissioner Subodh Yadav and others visited the spot and urged the police to initiate stringent action if such cases are detected in future. Citizens have also been urged to intimate the nearest police station, if they find any garbage laden vehicle dumping waste illegally.
