Two children charred to death :: BENGALURU, February 10, 2015 ::

Two young children were charred to death as the cot they were sleeping on caught fire due to an electric short circuit in their house at Lakshman Rao Nagar, near Adugodi, on Monday evening. Their mother had switched on a water immersion coil heater in a bucket of water next to the cot, which is suspected to have caused an electric short circuit.
The deceased Naveen Kumar (6) and his younger sister Kanishka Rani (4) were sleeping in the bedroom of their third floor flat on Monday evening, when the accident occurred. The kid’s mother Satya (32) had locked the bedroom from outside and the main door of the house, and gone downstairs to fetch water from a public tap.
Munni Reshma, a neighbour told The Hindu that she observed dense smoke emanating from the house at around 5.30 p.m. and called out to Satya who was downstairs.
“We tried to get into the house, but it was locked. Precious time was lost by the time Satya came up to the third floor and opened the door,” she recounted. She said that while many residents of the building tried to barge into the house, they couldn’t as there was dense smoke and fire.
It was more than half an hour before a Fire and Emergency Services personnel rushed to the spot and doused the fire. However, by the time they went into the bedroom, the two kids were charred to death. Fire department officials said they got a call at 5.45 p.m. and rushed a fire tender from Jayanagar fire station.
Wilson, a neighbour and childhood friend of Manjunath, the children’s father, said Manjunath, an autorickshaw driver, had big dreams for his kids. “He used to work hard and was saving up money for their education. The tragedy that has now befallen is too large to even comprehend,” he said.

Bengaluru engineering students bag prize for designing slide system to evacuate bus passengers during emergencies

Bengaluru engineering students bag prize for designing slide system to evacuate bus passengers during emergencies

All of us remember the bus fire accidents that took place near Mahabubnagar in Andhra Pradesh and near Haveri in Karnataka not long ago. Unable to escape from the raging fire, over 50 passengers lost their lives.
These tragic incidents led two engineering students from Bengaluru to develop a concept to save the lives of passengers in the event of a bus catching fire.
Preetham Kumar H., a student of Atria Institute of Technology, and Nikhil M., a student of Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology, have come up with an economical and efficient evacuation slide system to evacuate passengers, especially the old and the physically-challenged, faster and safer during emergencies.
Preetham and Nikhil, with their concept titled ‘Evacuation slides for heavy passenger vehicles during fire and accidents’, participated in the student poster presentation competition at the 14th Symposium on International Automotive Technology (SIAT 2015) organised by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) in Pune, Maharashtra, from January 21 to 24. The event saw the participation of vehicle manufacturers from China, U.S., Japan, Germany, South Korea and India.
The city students’ concept bagged the third prize and Preetham and Nikhil received the prize from Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari. “Our concept was appreciated by academicians and representatives of world-class automobile manufacturers. They said it was unique, useful and innovative,” said Preetham.
Three features
Nikhil explained that their concept had mainly three features. A wide slide is provided on the right side of hi-tech buses in which three passengers can easily slide at a time. A roof opening flushes out the smoke compressed in the bus during fire accidents. The suffocation caused by fire and fumes will be dangerous and fatal. There is also an efficient fire extinguishing facility.
“Our concept, though futuristic, can also be implemented in already running buses,” Preetham said.
Both said that they gained knowledge at the event by interacting with visitors, academicians, representatives from vehicle manufacturers from India and abroad, and also research students. “Such exposure is very important for engineering students,” added Nikhil.

MYSURU:: Officials All Set to Fight Forest Fires in National Parks :: 08th February 2015

MYSURU:In the wake of forest fires at the Bandipur National Park, the Forest Department has decided to take precautionary measures in all national parks.

Mysuru and Chamrajnagar districts have Nagarhole, Bandipur, Biligiri Ranganatha, M M Hills and Cauvery wildlife sanctuaries.

Though there is enough water in the waterholes and moisture inside the forest, authorities are not willing to take any chances. They have set up camps in vulnerable points, sought help from members of village forest committees and deployed additional patrol vehicles. The forest officials have also completed work on fire lines across these reserve forests. However, the upcoming Shivarathri jathra is worrying the forest officials as thousands of devotees visit M M Hills and burn camphor as offering to Lord Mahadeshwara.

As the authorities cannot ban the use of camphor, they have put up signages and plan to distribute notices asking the devotees to be careful so that the fire does not spread to the forest and pose a threat to the wildlife. While some suggest a few people deliberately set fire to settle scores with officials, there are others who believe that setting fire would bring them good rain and therefore enough grass for the cattle for the next season.

The conservators of forest have started recruiting temporary watchers and guards and have even sought support of tribals and locals.

All Prepared: The BRT sanctuary has completed fire lines in all the five forest ranges. Officials have decided to post additional men to check forest fire. These men will be equipped with wireless sets too.

In the M M Hills and Cauvery sanctuaries, more than 40 village forest committees are involved in the activities or else it would be difficult to protect the Western Ghats.

Wildlife activist Malleshappa said the tribal population, children and those living in the fringe of the forest areas have extended all support to the Forest Department. He said tourists have also been asked to refrain from throwing plastic and  waste in the forest areas.

Forest fire in Bandipur; no major damage caused:: Bandipur Tiger Reserve on Wednesday:: February 5, 2015

Forest fire in Bandipur; no major damage caused

A forest fire broke out near Kaniyanapura corridor of the Bandipur Tiger Reserve on Wednesday but was doused before it could wreak extensive damage to the flora and fauna.
The fire was noticed at Vireshwara Betta near Mangala dam and it spread towards a private resort by when about 20 forest watchers, fire spotters, and other personnel reached the spot and extinguished it.
H.C. Kantharaj, Director, Bandipur Tiger Reserve, told The Hindu that the blaze was minor and could at best be described as a bush fire as the area had scanty vegetation cover and grass.
“There was no bamboo or lantana in the region and hence there was no scope for crown fire,” said Mr. Kantharaj.
Damage
However, other sources said the fire raged for a couple of hours before being brought under control and estimate that about 20 to 30 acres of forest could have been burnt.
The authorities have recruited about 300 temporary staff and deployed them for fire-fighting operations in Bandipur — which is spread over 880 sq km — since January 20th.
However, as against 350 temporary staff recruited last year, the government approved 300 watchers for the current year, citing paucity of funds. Hence, a section of the Forest Department staff believe the fire could be an “act of revenge” by the disgruntled elements who were denied employment this year.
The authorities are bracing up for difficult times ahead as the searing heat and drought in Chamarajanagar region had dried up the forests.
“Omkara, Hediyala, Malyiyuru and Gundlupet ranges are sensitive, though vegetation continues to be green in forests bordering Kerala,” said Mr. Kantharaj.
While parts of Bandipur is fast drying up due to inadequate rainfall, proliferation of weeds like lantana has turned a vast swathe of the national park into a cinder box,” according to D. Rajkumar of the Wildlife Conservation Foundation.
The lantana coverage is almost 65 per cent in tourism area which is spread over 80 sq km, he added.

KOZHIKODE :: Testing time for Fire and Rescue Services, literally:; Department gets 20 to 30 bogus calls a month

Department gets 20 to 30 bogus calls a month

Testing the patience of the Fire and Rescue Services Department, the number of fake calls made to the emergency number 101 is witnessing a strange increase with the irresponsible dialling of the number by children and, often, by the elders too.
Officials of the Kozhikode Beach station say that the distress call facility is used as a tool for entertainment by many. They get an average of 20 to 30 bogus calls a month, they add. In most of the cases, the culprits are children and teenagers, who test all the available toll-free numbers from their parents’ mobile phones or landline numbers.
An absurd situation, according to a senior fireman at the Beach station, is that some women misuse the free helpline to entertain their children while feeding them. “When a child declines to eat, these women ring up the fire station and ask the child to listen to the voice from the other side. We have come across plenty of such instances, and the child is blamed in the end for creating a scene,” he adds.
Officials say that a majority of such fake calls and missed-call alerts emerge from some regions in Malappuram district that are covered by the helpline. The trend shows no let-up even now as some people still believe that it is meant for free entertainment.
Since the department is bound to attend all calls taking into account the gravity of the service, time spent dealing with the bogus ones is seriously spoiling their peace. “Initiating legal action against all the offenders is impractical as they are in large numbers and, moreover, it further wastes the time of the squad that is already hit by manpower shortage. Only through creating proper awareness will we be able to deal with the issue,” the officials say.
They are making use of all possible channels to discourage the undesirable trend and highlight the headache it creates to the entire force. “During the recent State School Arts Festival, we did our best to communicate the message to students and their parents,” they say.
