Cave in at construction site, labourer dead

Wife was rescued; two others were injured

A 36-year-old labour was killed and three others were injured after a portion of a wall collapsed on them at a construction site in Basavanagudi on Thursday morning. The Shankarapuram police filed a case of negligence against the contractor and site owner.

Rescuers were unable to save Shabarish on time, but his wife Shankaramma, 31, who was also trapped under the debris, was rescued. Another couple — Simhadri and his wife Padma — who were working in the site, sustained minor injuries. All four hail from Andhra Pradesh and live in sheds in Babusapalya, Banasawadi, said the police.

The accident occurred around 11.30 a.m. when earth movers were being used to dig up mud for the basement. A portion of a wall of the neighbouring compound collapsed on them, trapping Shabarish and Shankaramma.

Simhadri and Padma, who fled to safety, alerted others. Shankaramma was rescued and rushed to Victoria Hospital. Fire and emergency service personnel arrived at the site later and recovered Shabarish’s body.

"The contractor and the owner had no safety measures at the site and they were not supervising the work. They are on the run and efforts are on to nab them,” said the police.
