LPG leak halts traffic on NH4 AUGUST 26, 2015, SAKLESHPUR (HASSAN DIST)/MANGALURU, DHNS
Traffic on the Bengaluru-Mangaluru National Highway came to a halt near Doddatappale village for more than eight hours following a leak in the LPG gas tanker after it toppled in Sakleshpur taluk on Tuesday.
The LPG-filled tanker, bound for Bengaluru from Mangaluru, toppled after the driver lost control over the vehicle around 6 am.
As a precautionary measure, traffic was halted for an hour on the route.
However, vehicles had to be halted again following heavy leakage of LPG from the tanker.
Till the LPG was refilled into other containers, vehicles continued to be stranded.
Three empty tankers and gas-refilling machines were brought from Mangaluru for refilling purpose. The refilling work started at 3 pm and will continue up to 11 pm. As the highway was completely closed for traffic, hundreds of vehicles were stranded on the stretch on both the sides.
Police personnel had taken precautionary measures to avert any untoward incident.
KSRTC Mangaluru depot Manager Muralidhar said that no bus was diverted in the morning.
Due to another traffic jam in the evening, two KSRTC Volvo buses heading towards Bangaluru deviated and came via Mysuru, on the Mani-Mysuru Road.

Fire at garbage-processing unit brought under control Bengaluru, Aug 22, 2015,
Bengaluru, Aug 22, 2015, DHNS
The major fire that broke out at the MSGP garbage-processing unit near Chigarenahalli in Doddaballapur taluk on Thursday was brought under control on Friday with the firemen working late into the night.
However, firefighters are still struggling to douse the blaze. Six fire tenders were rushed to MSGP after the fire erupted at there at around 3 pm on Thursday.
The Doddabelavangala police have registered a case against the management of MSGP “because the fire adversely affects the people and livestock in the villages in and around Chigarenahalli”.
Though the police are still trying to establish the cause of the fire, the police suspect that a few persons associated with the firm might have deliberately set the garbage on fire unable to process some pockets of the trash.
The mishap has put extra burden on the Terra Firma unit as a few garbage trucks have been diverted there from MSGP unit in Chigarenahalli, sources said.

BROTHERS FROM BENGALURU DROWN WHILE IMMERSING ASHES OF THEIR GRANDFATHER
Mysuru, Aug. 21- The Cauvery Sangam at
Ganjam in Srirangapatna taluk in Mandya district, yesterday, stood witness to heart- rending incidents in which two brothers from
Bengaluru, who were immersing the ashes of
their grandfather drowned, while their uncle
who tried to rescue them was saved by
fishermen.
Following the tragedy, the grief-stricken
parents attempted suicide but were prevented.
The deceased have been identified as Bharath
(19) and Karthik (17), sons of Nagaraj, a
resident of Banashankari 3rd stage in
Bengaluru. Their uncle, who was saved by
four fishermen from drowning has been
identified as Mani.
It is reported that a group of 23 members
including Bharath, Karthik, their parents
Nagaraj and Devi, accompanied by uncle Mani
and seven children had arrived at the Sangam
in a Maruti van (KA 02 N-6880), a Tempo
Traveller (KA02 AC-6477) and a TATA Sumo
from Bengaluru to immerse the ashes of
Mani’s father, who had passed away five days
ago.
After completing the rituals which lasted
about 45 minutes, Bharath and Karhtik, along
with others, entered the Sangam in Ganjam
with the pot containing the ashes of their
grandfather for immersion.
While others returned from the river, Bharath
and Karthik stayed put at the Sangam. All of a
sudden at about 12.30 pm Karthik was
washed away by the river, while Bharath, who
was nearby, was also washed away while
trying to save Karthik.
Meanwhile, Mani, uncle of Bharath and
Karthik, who was helplessly watching the
proceedings jumped into the river to rescue
the two, but was caught in a whirlpool. Four
fishermen who were laying net to trap fish
nearby, noticed Mani being drowned, jumped
into the river and rescued him.
Srirangapatna Police led by Dy.SP Siddesh,
Circle Inspector M.K.Deepak, SI Sunil and
staff, who reached the spot along with Fire
Force and Emergency Services personnel from
Mandya and Srirangapatna, launched a hunt
for the bodies of Bharath and Karthik, which
proved futile in the evening. Search
operations have resumed this morning.
Saved by Fishermen: Mani, the uncle of
Bharath and Karthik, who drowned at
Cauvery Sangam in Ganjam yesterday
afternoon was saved from the jaws of death
by alert fishermen, who were fishing nearby.
Mani, who jumped into the river to rescue the
two brothers was struggling after being
caught in a whirlpool.
The four fishermen, who brought Mani to the
banks of the river after their brave rescue
attempt have been identified as Venkatesh,
Nagendra, Shivu and a physically challenged
person A. Mallesh, all residents of Ganjam,
Srirangapatna taluk.
Depressed parents attempt suicide: Mysuru,
Aug. 21 (RK&RNN)- Nagaraj and Devi, parents
of the brothers Bharath and Karthik, who
were drowned, were aghast to witness the
horrific incident of their children being
washed away at the Sangam. The distraught
couple who could not bear the horrific
incident, ran towards the river to jump into it
to end their lives at about 2.25 pm.
But their bid was foiled by locals and traders
in the vicinity, who rushed to the scene and
prevented them from jumping into the river.
Poignant moments were witnessed at the spot
where Nagaraj and Devi couple were pleading
with residents to allow them to end their lives
saying that they cannot not live without their
sons.
Cauvery Sangam lacks security: Mysuru,
Aug.21 (RK&RNN)- It is distressing to note that
Cauvery Sangam in Ganjam in Srirangapatna
taluk, which is visited by thousands of people
throughout the year, lacks security, exposing
tourists to danger.
It is unfortunate that the area is still without
security arrangement despite several
tragedies occurring regularly. Thousands visit
the area every year to immerse ashes of their
departed near and dear ones and perform
rituals throughout the season, even when the
water level of the river touches the danger
mark.
Four injured in LPG cylinder explosion at Duddagere MYSURU, AUG 22, 2015, DHNS
Four persons, including a woman, suffered burns after a domestic LPG cylinder exploded following a leakage of gas, at Duddagere in Mysuru taluk, on Thursday.
Following the incident, a team of officials, led by Senior Deputy Director for Food and Civil Supplies KRameshwarappa, inspected the mishap site on Friday.
The incident occurred when Ratnamma, wife ofHalagappa, turned on the gas stove at her house in the village. Ratnamma wanted to prepare coffee for her relatives Nagaraju andPuttaswamy.
All the four persons were injured in the incident and have been admitted to KRHospital in the City. According to the doctors treating the injured persons, the condition of Halagappa is critical.
During the inspection, the officials were of the opinion that the leakage of gas from the cylinder may have caused the mishap.
No other suspicious objects
Barring kitchen utensils, no other suspicious objects have been found, denying the
allegations of illegal gas refilling triggering a blast at the place.
Rameshwarappa said, "It was a miracle as other than the occupants of the house, who have been injured, the furniture and other materials remain intact".
The officials of Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), the main supplier, from whom the consumer had received the cylinder through its agency Aditya Gas Agency, are expected to visit the spot on Saturday.

BELAGAVI: Man trapped under rock rescued but loses legs
Man trapped under rock rescued but loses legs
TNN | Aug 20, 2015,BELAGAVI: A man who was stuck under a large rock while digging a well was rescued after a 10-hour operation that ended on Tuesday morning.
Police and fire services personnel worked the entire night at Masarguppi village in Athani taluk to rescue Subhash Laxman Metgud, 35. Using cranes, they removed the 12-tonne rock and rescued Metgud, but he lost both his legs.
Metgud was digging an open well at his farm using a JCB. He had reached a depth of 70 feet on Monday evening when the rock, in the middle part of the well, cracked. With his legs trapped, Metgud was in unbearable pain. He cried loudly for some time and fell unconscious.
Residents of the village and government officers rushed to the place. As rescuers started work, doctors treated a trapped Metgud and gave him glucose.
Government officers considered breaking the rock, but gave up the idea considering the risk it would pose to the man's life. They then decided to lift it using cranes.
The rescue operation concluded on Tuesday morning. A grievously injured Metgud was moved to a private hospital in Miraj in Maharashtra, deputy police superintendent MS Angadi said.

Two men die in manhole
n what can only be described as cruel irony, two labourers died on Tuesday after descending into a manhole in front of the house of Minister for Social Welfare H. Anjaneya, who has the responsibility to ensure the prevention of incidents of manual scavenging in the State.
Further, the two workers — Prasanna Kumar (29) and Yathiraj (23) — were engaged by a contractor hired by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) to clear the clog in front of the quarters of the Income Tax and Central Excise Department. Around noon on Tuesday, Yathiraj entered the manhole — which comes under the ambit of the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act 2013 — to clear the drain. Seeing him suffocate, Prasanna Kumar reached out to help his colleague, but fell down into the manhole. This is the ninth death since the practice was prohibited in 1993, and observers say this incident points to the government’s inability to halt manual scavenging.
