Seven stuck in church lift rescued
People experienced some tense moments at St. Paul’s Cathedral on the premises of St. Mark’s Cathedral near Cubbon Park here on Saturday evening when seven persons, including a three-year-old girl, were stuck in the lift for over one-and-half hours due to a technical snag.
The incident occurred at around 8.30 p.m. when the group, all from the same family, came to attend a family function organised on the fourth floor of the church. They got into the lift on the ground floor, but it got stuck even before reaching the first floor, creating panic.
The group tried to open the door and shouted for help. Passersby, who heard their screams, rushed to their rescue along with the church authorities. They tried hard to open the door, but in vain. After half an hour of futile attempts, they informed the Fire and Emergency Services personnel at around 9.30 p.m. The emergency services personnel rushed to the spot and managed to open the door and pull out all seven from the lift, one by one, in an operation that lasted over half an hour. A senior fire official, who supervised the rescue operation, said: “The door was jammed due to a technical snag and no one was injured in the incident. We suspect that the lift was jammed due to overloading.”
The Cubbon Park police asked the church administration to get the lift serviced before operating it again.
