A 16-year-old boy suffered burn injuries when a refrigerator exploded in Sunnadakeri in the city on Tuesday.
The police said the incident took place on the first-floor house of Kantharaj, who runs a canteen. His son Sharath, who was sleeping near the refrigerator, has been admitted to JSS Hospital with burn injuries.
While the police attributed the incident to “short circuit”, District Fire Officer Gururaj K.T. said the fridge caught fire due to “over-heating” in a room without sufficient ventilation.
The boy has suffered 40 to 60 per cent burns while a middle-aged woman, who was also in the house, escaped with minor injuries, officials said. Fire force personnel from Saraswathipuram Fire Station reached the spot. “The area is congested and it was difficult for fire engines to reach the spot. However, a bullet with fire extinguisher pack was pressed into service,” Mr. Gururaj said.
Krishnaraja police have registered a case.
