The godown of a cloth shop situated on the busy Commercial Street was gutted in a fire that broke out on Saturday.
Passers-by who noticed smoke billowing out from the basement alerted the shopkeepers. The shop was located close to the Commercial Street police station. The owners evacuated the shop and minimised damage in the godown.
Five Fire and Emergency Services personnel rushed to the spot and put out the fire. The loss of property is yet to be ascertained. Though police suspect that an electrical short circuit was the cause of the fire, investigations are on.
